School History
Meadowbrook Waldorf School was founded in 1979 by a group of pioneering parents and teachers who recognized the value of Waldorf Education and were determined to bring it to the families of southern New England. The school operated in rented spaces around Rhode Island for many years with dedicated parents bringing their children from across the region. As the school grew, the search began for a permanent home where we could put down roots.
The generosity of MWS families made it possible for us to purchase 28 acres of forest, meadows and wetland in Richmond, RI and a capital campaign was launched to fund the construction of a 15,000 sq. ft. building. Parents, friends and neighbors volunteered time and expertise to the building project and, in 2007, MWS moved to its new home. The school continued to grow and expand its program offerings.
On July 29, 2018 a lightning strike caused a devastating fire in the roof space of the school. Despite the best efforts of more than 200 firefighters from across Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut, the building was declared a total loss. The response from our local, regional and Waldorf school communities was immediate and breathtaking. Friends, neighbors and Waldorf colleagues from around the world, gave to our GoFundMe appeal. A temporary lease on a former public school was secured and we reopened on time that Fall thanks to donations of furniture and equipment, and the hard work of our volunteers.
Rebuilding began immediately and the Meadowbrook Rising Campaign was launched to fund enhancements and new space for additional programs. The school building was completed in September 2020 and work will continue on a new Community Center as we move forward and build for the future.
